PROLOGUE
Flames. All they could see were flames. The house was burning fast and they had been too late to save the parents, their two sons and eldest daughter. The firemen were searching for a three-year-old girl, towards the back of the house.
Mr. Hatsumi was looking in the kitchen, at least what was left of it, near where the fire started when he heard it. Cough, cough, cough. “Help… cough… me… cough… please” Mr. Hatsumi headed toward the voice and found the little girl, covered in ash and had some major burns. Carefully lifting her up, Mr. Hatsumi worked his way to the exit, and out to the paramedics, where she would be looked over.
She was fine, but would have some permanent burns on her arms, that would be easy to cover up. “Seeing as how she no longer has a family, may I look after her? I have a boy her age that could play with her” Mr. Hatsumi walked over and the girl jumped into his arms. It took four men to get her off him.
It's been two months and the girl had her birthday last week, she got some nice clothes from Mr. Hatsumi, whom she now called ‘Papa and some drawings and hand-picked flowers from Mr. Hatsumi’s son Tom, who got embarrassed when he gave them to her. “This has been fun. Even if Mama and Papa weren't here to see my birthday.”
The two children were in the front yard, when it started to get dark “Tom, go inside. I'll be in, in a bit.” The girl ran down the street, when Tom was inside, he was back out the front door so fast it was as if he flew. Tom followed her down the street and saw her enter the daycare center. He went inside slowly, and asked about the girl, the man said that every now and then she would come and sleep here. “Can you make sure she doesn't leave until I come here in the morning, please?” the man nodded “thank you” and Tom walked out.
The next morning he showed up and she was sitting on the bench chatting with the assistant. She heard Tom approach and looked around to see him with tears down his face. “If you don't want to live with us, you don't have to” She hugged him and whispered something in his ear. Then ran through the door behind the counter and disappeared.
Ten years later....
You could sum up this girl in one word. Freak. She was just too weird. Her name was Sakura. Not your average English name, but her family were Japanese and although they haven't been in Japan for eight generations her family kept true to their heritage. Only one of her classmates would be kind to her. He was popular, and every girl wanted him. Including Sakura, but it was pointless, ‘Who would want someone like me?’ were her thoughts.
Sakura stood on the roof top looking down on the class below. She wore the girls winter uniform today. A long sleeved white top and a deep blue bit over the top of that, giving it the look of a sailor's suit, tied at the front was a red ribbon. She also wore a knee length skirt that was also deep blue; the girls would often call the uniform a ‘sailor's suit. Her hair was a charcoal black, and in the right lighting you could see blue streaks through it. It was put up in two braids. Her eyes, hidden behind a pair of glasses, were a deep brown, which looked like dark chocolate, and could give the impression they were looking into a person's soul, seeing the real person and not the fake they were trying to be.
Sakura came to the roof to calm down. She was being teased again. A few years ago Sakura started to leave the class and not return until she was calm.
No one has ever seen Sakura in a summer uniform. She had a very dark past and hated it so much. However that was not why she was constantly picked on, it was because she did not talk. No one has ever heard her talk, not even make a sound.
Sakura heard the door open then close, but acted as if she didn't notice, what she did next was what shocked the person behind her the most.
While Sakura was on her way to the roof top one of her classmates stood up so suddenly it made the room jump “I can't take this any longer!” he almost shouted. “What do you mean Tom?” asked the teacher not taking her eye off the board where she was writing a question. “The way this class treat Sakura-san” Tom answered walking to the door. “I think he sympathizes for the freak” whispered Eve, he let out a frustrated scream “This is what I mean,” his hand on the door “you always talk about her like you know everything” and he left it at that.
Tom also wore the winter uniform today. His was a white shirt with a chest pocket and five buttons; he wore a deep blue tie that matched his jacket. The jacket was deep blue with buttons all the way down; Tom left his top one undone like most other guys in the school. The jacket went down to his waist. His pants were black and had the legs rolled up so they sat at his shins. Tom had silver hair that shone in the sun light and eyes as blue as sapphire, they matched his uniform.
Tom, for a long time now, had stood up for Sakura. He wandered the corridors, taking his time, to calm down. Tom stopped and looked around, he was at the door to the roof. Tom looked through the small window and watched Sakura. ‘God, she looks so cute’ he thought as he opened the door and stepped outside, Sakura seemed like she had not noticed. What Sakura did next made Tom almost fall back against the door, but he caught himself just in time.
“Do you remember the story of the three-year-old girl who survived the house fire?” Sakura did not look up. Tom, not realizing what happened, answered “Yeah, I remember. My father was the one who rescued her.” He was looking at his feet, so he didn't notice, when Sakura rolled up her sleeves slightly. “They say that she would have permanent burns on her arms” Sakura smiled slightly as she hid her arms from view. “Her family was killed in the fire, so father decided to look after her, but after a month or two she ran away,” he looked up “we were so upset. She just ran off, and who knows what happened?” Tears started forming in Sakura’s eyes. “Well, if she ever found out how much she hurt you and your father, I'm sure she would be very sorry” Tom looked up. Sakura was facing him, with her arms beside her, tears sliding down her cheeks slowly. “Tom-kun, I'm so very sorry. I caused you and your father so much pain. Can you forgive me?” Tom had known the truth for a while, having followed her when she ran and from that day on he became her silent protector, nodded “I can forgive you, but father on the other hand, he might be a little harsher than me.” And they both laughed.
They were on their way back to class. Walking through the corridors they chatted happily “…so then I said ‘what do you think?’ rhetorically and walked out” Tom finished. They reached their classroom corridor and Sakura said “When we reach the door I will return to the way I was. No noise and a mask of no emotion. Don't argue, Tom-kun” she added as he opened his mouth “Fine, on one condition, you come see father before you go home today.” She nodded as they reached the door and entered the classroom.
School finished and the teacher asked Sakura and Tom to stay behind for a little chat. “I know that you have had problems with the other students,” she began “but that is no reason to keep leaving the class like that” Sakura remained silent and Tom got an idea “Sakura-san knows that she shouldn’t act that way, but, if she stayed in the room and her anger got the better of her it would be utter chaos and pain” the teacher looked towards Sakura, who nodded in silent agreement. “One more thing, before you leave,” the teacher said as they stood up “Why don't you talk, Sakura-san?” Sakura whispered into Tom's ear and he repeated “Sakura-san only talks to those whom she trusts” Sakura nodded and they left the room.
Walking down the corridors in silence, unaware of a person following them at a distance, Sakura whispered “What would you say if I said ‘I need to go to daycare before we do anything else?” Tom stopped and Sakura looked at him. “I would say ‘why on earth would you need to go there?” Sakura rubbed the back of her head and gave a fake laugh “I need to pick up something or else it goes to someone else” they started walking again. “Sakura-san what do you need t-” she cut him off “When we’re alone, don’t be so formal…it annoys me” Tom started again “Sakura, what do you need to pick up?” Sakura just smiled and said “You'll have to wait and see” and went silent.
The one that was following stopped at the front entrance and watched the two round the corner. “Well, this is interesting, to say in the least. Who knew Sakura-san could talk!” the person walked off. |
